Bunny Beauty Parlor
Rabbits are fastidious groomers. They insist on being clean and tidy and will lick themselves like cats! But unlike cats, bunnies cannot vomit. This is why your bunny MUST be brushed very thoroughly on a regular basis. Otherwise, the ingested fur will accumulate in their GI tract. Since rabbits cannot vomit, the hair can only be passed in the stool. If it is not passed, a blockage can occur. This is a medical emergency for a rabbit. At this point, the bunny will stop eating and will be in great pain, leading to GI stasis and/or bloat due to gas accumulation in the gut. The gut starts to slow down, and eventually shut off completely...that is when most rabbit owners notice it: because the bunny stops eating. This is already a late stage and if not addressed immediately, the bunny will die. Sadly, this is very common.
This is why Bunny World Foundation has created The Bunny Beauty Parlor to help rabbit owners keep their bunnies healthy. Grooming your bunny is also a great way to connect with him/her and bond. Also, it is a good opportunity to check his overall health and and look for any skin problems, lumps or any sign of medical condition. We recommend grooming your bunny every 6 to 8 weeks.
Read more about grooming on our Grooming page. Full grooming includes brushing, nail trimming, scent gland cleaning, and “neckline” and “bikini line” cleanup. It takes 2-4 hours to groom a short-haired rabbit who is under 4 pounds.
We strongly recommend learning our thorough grooming method in person at our Bunny Beauty Parlor. We offer both Group and Private sessions. Learning to properly groom your bunny can help prevent GI stasis and save your bunny’s life!
